Patrick McGinley's The Omahas team won the November 4's after a dramatic final table on Saturday afternoon. Jamie Harrington won the individual first prize of €1000 and, in doing so, took his teammates Mary Keary, Declan O'Leary and Patrick McGinley to the overall first prize and €3200.
The Afternooners had started Day 2, the final table, with 3 players remaining (no other team had more than one) making them the favourites but all their players were short-stacked meaning that Pink Willie Browne, Darragh Kelly and Sean Walsh were going to need some luck. Their onlooking team-mate Ronan O'Halloran couldn't believe his eyes as first Pink Willie and then Darragh were knocked out by 4 outers on the river.
This meant that The Afternooners, who qualified through the daytime mini-league, needed Sean to finish at worst fifth to ensure a second place finish with a chance of overall glory and that's exactly where he finished. Well done, Sean.
With 4 players left, we were left with the remarkable position that 3 teams could still win with an individual first and one could take second, bouncing the Afternooners into first.
Silage Jokerstar found 88 in the small blind and AA in Jamie Harrington's BB to finish 4th. Valerie Hamilton from Cork's Macau club then fell third, again to Jamie who now had a huge chip lead over Dermot"Sham"Fahey.
Now, the players were playing for big money as Jamie would get €700 for second and €4200 for first, while Dermot would get €700 for second and €2700 for first, giving an extra €2200 to the Afternoon lowrollers.
It all ended very quickly with Dermot's KQ failing to Jamie's AT and the title went to The Omahas. These team events are amongst the best tourneys of the year, bring on the next one quickly please.
